Leveling Yard
PaulsBoutique – posted 02 July 2001 12:18
What is the best material to use for leveling a yard? It is St. Augustine grass that was laid as sod back in September, 2000. There are parts of the yard where the gaps exist in which the sod did not come together.
Any advice?

Paul, the generally accepted answer is to fill in with soil closely similar to the existing root-zone soil. Changing soils could creat problems in drainage. In practice, however, sand is the easiest material to handle because it spreads easily. And because sand is generally inert and will not decompose, filling in with sand should be fairly permanent.

What’s the easiest method to put down the sand to make it level?

Use a rake and shovel to spread the sand. A wheelbarrow full of sand could be a big help if you have a large area to cover!

Paul sugest you use sand spread with shovel and allow to dry. Then beg, borrow or buy a level lawn and drag over lawn a few times.Or drag a large yard broom over the lawn.Good luck Ozzie Greenkeeper.

For a cheap recyclable lawn level, take a look at the Fake Rake:

It just takes a few nails and some scrap lumber.
