New sod turning brown

Hello – I live in east-central Illinois and got new installed in mid-July. I was trying to keep up with the watering, but major parts turned brown (I may have not watered enough in the beginning).
Is it to late to recover by watering, or is it dead and should I just give up? The parts are a yellow-brown, but wet underneath. There are smatterings of green grass throughout the brown sod parts and it turns an orange/yellowish color when watered.
