Hi all. I am trying to find out what kind of grass grows at a park near my Mother in laws house. This grass stays green all year long, even under a foot of Colorado snow. I want to plant the same seed myself so that I can have a green lawn year round too. The only type of seed that I have found to be an actual different breed that claims year round green, is a product called So-Green. It contains a specialized strain of grass called Abernile perrenial rye. I am wondering if anyone out there has tried this seed and what the results were. It’s kind of expensive so I would love to hear some results before trying it myself. Thanks for your interest.

I read about the So-Green Abernile grass from following up a story about grass art that stays green when dried. I’m trying to find out if it’s good for (or even allowed in!) California, and if so how best to acquire some.

All I’ve found so far is a site in the UK that sells a minimum of 10 kg for 77 pounds. This is a lot more than I want for testing, and ~$144 plus shipping for that much weight, plus possible import problems, is too much risk if I don’t know it works in this climate.

My high level goal is to have something in the front yard that is aesthetically pleasing enough that the neighbors don’t grumble about me, but that I don’t have to water much (if at all), and doesn’t require much maintenance to remain acceptable.

The So_Green lawn seed is marketed in the UK by British Seed Houses. I bought a 500g pack around 2006 in the UK for less than USD10.

Full details are here:http://www.thegrassroute.co.uk/showProduct.asp?productId=12&productCategoryId=4

If that link doesn’t work, then go via www.britishseedhouses.co.uk through products for domestic lawns.

I was pleased with the results from my use of So-Green lawn seed.

It says on the web page above that the mix is:Staygreen Perennial Ryegrass 60% Slender Creeping Red Fescue 35% Velvet bent 5%

On my pack it’s more specific. It says:60% Perennial Ryegrass Abernile35% Creeping Red Fescue Rufilla5% Bentgrass Avalon
