Can some one help? Our side yard is covered with tiny mounds of dirt, with a hole in the top about the diameter of a pencil. They’re everywhere! I’ve never seen anything crawl in or out, but it gives me the creeps wondering what might be in there. Some one has mentioned burrowing wasps. What the heck is that?? Is there even such a thing? We live in S. Florida. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Julie, this may be the same thing. If the mounds are low, no more than 1/2 inch high, 2-3 inches in diameter, and are made from deep soil, such as white sand, then it’s probably a leaf cutter bee. They are metallic green and roundish as bees go, and form cigar-like tubes made from the glued leaf disks, about 3/4 inch in diameter. The larvae are placed in the septa of the tubes. The cocoplum is one of the best hosts.Phil
