For large lawn between San Antonio & Austin with dogs. Clay soil.

I’m curious why you would have narrowed down your two choices to just these. Isn’t Cavalier a fine bladed zoysia matrella, while Empire would be a wider blade zoysia japonica? If you like the fine bladed look, why not Zeon? If you like the wider blade, why not El Toro or Jamur?

I like the look of med to fine blade, but want the grass to hold up to kids and dogs. I thought cavalier was supposed to be a good grass. I just want to pick the best grass for my situation that is easy to maintain. Also looked into palisade. Have not seen Zeon around here and was told Jamur was hard to keep up??
Appreciate any input.

Have you looked at these studies to see comparative spread rates and recovery rates?

I think the reason I got stuck with Meyer zoysia is I told the landscaper I wanted low maintenance/infrequent mowing. (At the time, I didn’t even know there were other choices.) Meyer is so slow growing, I don’t have to mow it much, but it also doesn’t recover from wear or other problems. It also didn’t do well in shady spots. So now, I have lots of thin areas. I would rather mow more often and have a denser lawn.
