Should I???

My yard here in Amarillo has many thick spots of St. Augustine growing. My natural grass is Bermuda, I believe, as is everyone else’s. My yard looks horrible while the neighbors all have deep green yards that are just beautiful! The nursery guy said I should let the S.A take over, and this is what I have been doing, but honestly, my yard is becoming an eyesore! I would appreciate any advice folks as I would like to take back some of the control.I will mention that last year we hired a company to do all chemical treatments. This helped green it up, but still we have huge spots of thick tall grass sticking out everywhere. it is not the same shade as the other grass either which only makes it worse. Please, if anyone has any advice on my problem, let me hear it. I am beginning to think I should have tried killing the SA before it got this bad. However, it will be several years before it takes completely over and my neighbors are now having to fight the problem.

Generally mixed grass southern laws are unsightly. You need to decide if you want a Bermuda lawn or a St Augustine lawn. Both have benefits.
Post back if you decide which you want. It is easier to get Bermuda to take over St Augustine than vice versa.

I agree. Normally St.Augustine wont completely take over bermuda.

Maybe I am incorrect as to which is taking over? The grass that I have taking over is thick and greener than the thinner and denser grass I have. The new grass also stands taller where it grows. As you can see I know nothing about grass and my husband does not have any clue neither. He just mows it and goes on…

I say go with one variety. Use the one most prevelent in your neighborhood. Use an edger and cut around areas you want to kill of the variety of turf you deceide to kill. Then spray Round-Up herbicide (Read and follow directions-this is a non-selective herbicide and kills all it touches leaf blades of) By “edging” the areas you contain the kill. Keep kills “squared off” (easier to resod). Then yes resod with the variety you decide to keep.
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
