i recently bought a house which has about 12 pine trees in the front yard. i was wanting to grow grass under the trees. the people who lived here before me used the pine straw as a ground covering. which everyone tells me here is an acceptable covering. i disagree i think it makes the house look abandonned. is there a grass that will grow in the shade really well? the pine needle arent a issue, i can rake the yard weekly. i live in norfolk,va. i am going to try to get a soil sample in for analysis soon but was wondering if any of you guy had any thoughts. is there a grass seed available or am i going to have to lay sod. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Grass under pine trees? Hmmm. I’m not sure that will work. How about a ground cover that looks like grass? You might be able to grow monkey grass in there. There are some dwarf varieties that look very much like grass.
