laying st augustine sod

have a large area to lay sod…..currently is natural terrain (which means it’s weeds)
currently having a pool dug and we are using the excavated dirt to cover the area….very good dirt
should we kill the weeds first?
the new dirt will be at least 3″ thick in all areas

one more question….will the weed killer linger and kill the new sod?

If this were my problem, I’d spray the weeds with Roundup (no it won’t hurt the sod) and then lay down the new dirt.
