I have a 27 yr old santa ana bermuda lawn.performance is good,maintenance a nightmare.have torn out plants in parkway wish to replace with same type of grass,cannot find sod.live in anaheim,calif.anyone know what newer sod equiv is(tiffgreen,tifdarf,tifway etc..)? Also,is aerating twice a year as effective as rennovating yearly?its easier and I am no spring chicken any longer.Joe

Similiar types to Santa ana include- GN-1, Tifway, and Princess 77 . You can also get some “free Santa ana” by de-thatching your lawn and spreading the detached sprigs over the parkway area. Aerifying can help to keep the thatch down, but dense growing bermuda’s also need (at least) some short mowing during the cool times of the year. This will cut down,(so to speak) on the super thick mat that develops if the mowing height is kept high year around. Slowly reduce the mowing height starting in early fall…..taking it down step by step,(instead of all at once) so as to not create a massive amount of work for your tired, worn out body! haha
