Help!!

I live in South Carolina, and my yard was plugged with St. Augustine that eventually took over before I moved into this house. I have been here for almost 6 years, and for the past 2 years, my lawn has died away… especially this year.
The grass that I have is a local-type which has (until the plague) faired quite well in our area. I haven’t done a lot to maintain our lawn – and have never needed to. It has always been quite thick and very maintenance free. I do live under a lot of oak trees, so I lime heavily about every other year. Other than that, I water it when it gets really dry.
The past 2 years have been quite dry and we are in drought status as I write this… I also have a couple of patches of centipede mixed in, and the dying off doesn’t seem to affect the centipede like the St. Augustine.
Here’s what it does:The grass slowly turns yellow and thins in patches. Not really in symmetrical spots (though there are some circular) – there are even areas where the yellowing and dying seems to run in an irregular line pattern. After yellowing, the runners simply dry up and die. I have patches of lawn that simply have dead, dry runners covering the ground…
I have very little experience with grass or problems with it. Actually, just as I began to try and learn some things, the problem started. Every year for the past 2 or so, it seems the problem escalates….
Please help me!! What can I do?

Where do you live in SC. I live in Murrells Inlet. I travel to TN monthly and could take a look at it. I travel I-20 to I-26. Let me know. I suspect St. Augustine decline and can recommend a great program to prevent it and keep your lawn beautiful and growing.

I appreciate the reply. I’m in Anderson – not exactly en route to TN, but not too far from 26. e-mail go***@ms*.com

Wow Anderson is about a three hour detour. Do you have irrigation? What is the size of your yard? What fertilizer have you used/when? Have you gotten a soil test in the last 2 years? Roy

Forgot to ask: What type of equipment do you have? Anything that can spray heavy amounts of liquid like a backpack sprayer? If you do not have any sprayer equipment, would you consider spending about $250 for a sprayer that you could pull behind a lawn tractor? Do you have a Tractor Supply close enough to buy such? Let me know before I get into what should be done to recover the lawn. Water is a MUST! The stuff that you need will have to be watered into the soil. If not, it would be a waste of time and money. Thanks, Roy
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
