Can I plant grass over existing lawn?

Hopefully this question isn’t as silly as it sounds…
I am in the process of re-grading part of my lawn. I am removing an old paver patio and I’d like to take the 4-5″ of soil that was beneath it and use it to fill a 4-5″ depression downhill in the yard (which already has an established lawn on it).
Can I simply lay the new soil over the established lawn and re-seed? I know I’ll smother what’s there (which is OK, since I’m re-seeding anyway), but I’m trying to see if I can save myself the effort of having to remove the old sod before I drop the soil. Will the new lawn grow fine over the old?
Thanks!
