Planting grass where there used to be a blue spruce

We are in the process of cutting down a blue spruce that takes up the majority of our back yard. Once we are done cutting and have cleaned up all the needles, we are wanting to plant grass. What do we need to do to to ensure that the grass will grow and be as full as possible?
