I live in Tx and control of fire ants is getting harder and harder. I have been told that we will be loosing some of our control in the form of Ant poisons. Does anyone have any thing that they use this does not cost a arm and a leg to buy. Our budget has been cut again but they want ants to be controlled. Please Help.

Donkey, I have used Amdro Bait very effectively for many years, and the price of the chemical is acceptable to me, considering the consequences of not using it. I like the fact that as a mound treatment, I am targeting just the imported Argentine fire ants, and preserving the native fire ants. Amdro can also be applied broadcast at very low application rates, but it requires a special spreader.
Today there are many alternative products, for which you may want to do a price comparison, and follow up to see how well they work for your situation. This should be a fairly complete list: Award, DeltaGard, Distance Fire Ant Bait, Orthene, Pinpoint 15G, Scimitar, and Talstar. The inexensive Dursban is being phased out.
