I’ve got a home in Midtown Atlanta. Don’t know what kind of grass it is, plain fescue I think. Weeds have been taking over most of the yard in the last few months, but the biggest problem is the ground in several spots in the front yard is loosening, so when you walk on the grass, several areas are soft and “sinking” beneath my feet. Any help? I have an underground sprinkler system that came with the house, but never’s been used. Also, I do want to replace the grass with a sod of some sort, but don’t know the best replacement.

It sounds like you have some leaks in your sprinkler system. See if you can locate a sprinkler head(s) in the soft areas. If you see water weeping out the top of the head- this means you have valves that are not shuting off completely. Many types of grass do well in your area…..check the web sites of local sod growers to find out more info and pictures of available sod selections.

You might even have leaks underground. Just because the head may not be leaking, you might just have a break in the line. You might hav to call someone in to check it out.
