Hello all..
I am laying new sod this weekend and wouldlike some last minute opinions on Grass. I was thinking St. Augustine..but My lawn is in full Sun except for a medium size tree that puts off a little shade in certain parts throughout the day.
Does St. Augustine do well under these conditions?
I’ve tilled and cleared out the old grass and plan to mix cow manure with top soil before I lay the sod.
Pls let me know if I need to do something special before i lay this.

Hello, Im here in Wylie,Tx..Im no expert but from places Ive read, St. Augustine does best in semi-sun, not full. I just sodded my back yard which faces south and gets full sun all day with Empire Zoysia, zoysia’s grow dense, slow and are very drought resistant,dark green, you can get different strains from thin bladed to wide..I also just sodded my mother-in law’s front yard with Raleigh St. Austine, she’s got two big trees that block the sun alot. I got my sod from A1 Grass in Plano,they carry 3 strains of zoysia, and 2 strains of St. Aug, among other bermuda’s, they have there own sod farm in Ennis, and have very good quality turf. Oh by the way I paid $120 for a pallet of St. Aug, and 137.50 for the Empire..

Forgot to mention an important thing so this wont happen to you!!!!I also tilled my back yard 4-6 inches deep on a friday, got my grass next morning and it was raining, well it rained all day and my whole back yard was like MUD Soup!! It Was very very diffucult to get the sod level do to making 6 inch ruts where ever you walked. THe ground should be smooth as glass before laying the sod..Learn from my mistake, I recently rolled my sod but its nowwhere near level in some spots. I think its also suppose to rain friday, so, lay the sod when the ground is wet, but spray the soil before each peice of sod gets put down.

why reliegh SA? I think Palmetto is better all around SA cultivar. I live in Arlington but moving to Midlothian mid-summer when the house is built. I’m considering Palmetto SA or Zoysia but not sure which culitvar at the moment. Currently, Zenith or Companion are the top choices. I keep going back and forth on Palmetto SA or Zoysia.

“Why Raleigh St. Augustine” you ask, well her house already has it on the side of her house and has performed wonderfully, this strain is also more shade tolerant than others…Have you read about Empire Zoysia or seen it in person? If you have I imagine you would go with it too, I believe it performs the best for the DFW area. Are you going to be seeding or sodding zenith or companion?

So ..no on the St. Augustine?? Do you have a pic of Empire Zoysia? I need to hurry and figure out what type to lay.
Also, I need to make sure the ground is moist when I lay the sod?

I’ve done some reasearch and I like what I hear on the Empire Zoysia!! It sounds like I will head in that direction.

Hey Josh, good choice, yea if the ground is dry, just spray it enough to soak down 2-3 inches just before laying each piece of sod down. If I had to do it all over again, I would of rented a lawn roller and filled it 1/3 of water and roll the soil to make it real flat and to see where all the low spots are. Check a1grass.com, they delivered 4 pallets to me for 40 bucks, the Empire will be fully green in about 2 more weeks, I got it when it was semi-dormant but its greenin up good. Good Luck!!
