I have five acres of wooded land with our house in the middle. We’ve just had about half of the land cleared down to the raw sandy soil and are wanting to sod mainly to keep the wild vegatation from taking back over. What sort of sod would be recommended? There will be no topsoil and no irrigation system. Thanks in advance.

Grass will have trouble getting established in poor soils with no irrigation. Wildflower Seed with perennial varieties would be better suited to a non-irrigated area, but water will be a limiting factor.

No grass can survive without water over an extended period, although some bermudas can remain dormant until watered again. Sodding an area also requires significant water during and after installation.Dormant bermuda looks like dead sod in most areas, and won’t survive in winter climates, so you need to determine whether you want ground cover, grass or other plants that require less water to survive.Good Luck!
