Wild onions in bermuda
gobblerhuntr – posted 28 September 2003 20:29
It is late sept and temps are going to be highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s for the next few weeks. In the spring I use msma or 2,4d to get rid of unwanted weeds and such. But it says to use when temps are 80s. What can I do about the onions? Also I put some triple 15 on about 2 weeks ago, will this be enough to aide the roots through winter. I live in West TN.

Are you sure they are onions, with bulbs, and not wildflowers. Do they smell like onions when you mow?

Onions, for sure. Just like the ones that come up in the spring.

use 24d on the wild onions- temps are perfect now- no msma!

Are you not suppose to use msma this time of year?

msma is for dallisgrass and crabgrass control, only. since your area will be experiencing a frost soon, there’s no point in putting down something that the frost will kill anyway.

What is the operating temp on the 2,4-d? Mid 70s it will work ok? Also how much do you reccommend putting down per 1000 sq ft?

you’ll have to read the label, it depends on what kind of product you’re purchasing, but your temps are perfect. try some local ag supply places

Regarding the wild onions – my experience with these little beggars in a bermuda lawn south of Dallas, Tx was that they copuldn’t hold up to frequent mowing. I mowed twice a week for three – four weeks and they disappeared for good.
