What is this?

My yard consists of grass that grows pretty fast with water and light, however, in the back yard is a Florida-shaped patch about the size of a small car that stays dead-looking in the winter and turns green in the summer. It doesnt grow very tall at all, nothing like the other grass. It also is like carpet, very very thick. What kind of grass does this thick stuff sound like. I know nothing at all about grass.
