Hello was looking up info., but couldn’t find any so deciding to ask a question. Well we moved here to Sugar Land, Tx and we don’t know the grass type of our grass. How could we possibly find out? Also our grass is yellow and dry in some areas and in a couple of those areas I think there are ants? Oh yes and has anyone ever had any problems with opposums digging in their yards?? If anyone could help it is much appreciated. Thank You

JMC, if you could email me a decent digital photo to ed****@tu*******.com I’ll take a look. I realize that more photos on this site would help people identify what they’ve got. Here are some turf images:

JMC has emailed me JPEG lawn images, and the grass in question is clearly St. Augustinegrass. This is coarse, spongy grass used throughout Florida and the Gulf Coast of the U.S., parts of California, parts of Australasia, southern Africa, coastal South America, the West Indies, and in isolated areas of the Mediterranean.
The closest good photo of a St. Augustine lawn that I can find is here:https://turfgrass.com/pics/pics10.html
For identification purposes ou will probably do better to pull up and look at the individual runners, which are called “stolons” because they are above ground:https://turfgrass.com/pics/pics11.html
The grass in JMC’s lawn is yellow and looks like it has been under some periodic drought stress. If you have stinging ants there are several low-toxicity baits such as Amdro. The problem with opossums is best corrected by removing their food source, which is most likely white grubs (including chafers, June beetles, etc.):https://turfgrass.com/pics/pics24.htmlor mole crickets:https://turfgrass.com/pics/pics20.htmlLook for a general purpose lawn insecticide that is labeled for this purpose.
