St. Augustine grass type

How do I tell what type of St. augustine is in my yard. I purchase a thirty year old house three years ago here in the miami area and cut and watered the lawn every day. This year I got brown spot every where and seems like something eating the lawn. I cut the grass weekly and have various weed and bug killers but the spots have not disappeared. A local city maintenance employee saw the spots and said the lawn mower was spreading the disease. What are the first steps take to address this problem.

You should be able to take samples of your grass to a county agricultural extension agent. They work for the state university system. I think every state has them.
Sound like you have a fungus. There is an organic solution to most all fungus disease. It always sounds funny but the solution is to apply ordinary corn meal (grocery store or feed store) at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Give it 3 weeks and your problems will be over. Your grass may not have returned from the dead but the fungus should be dead. The new grass should start coming in after that.
