My lawn was full of St. Augustine seed headsa month or two ago. Someone told me it’s notthat St. Augustine seed doesn’t exist, butthat the quality of plant from SA seed is questionable. (That’s why it’s propagatedvegatatively.)

I dont think any St Augustine seed is available today. There was a time that two seeded St Augustine varieties were sold: Raleigh-S (seed), and Pennington Seed Company sold a seeded St Augustine, but both stopped several years ago. As hankhill said, there were problems maintaining quality from the parental plant. One website I read not long ago summed up the St Augustine seed question buying commercial-grade St Augustine seed is like trying to buy a Unicorn Please let us all know if you can find one!

Another forum, someone cut off seedheads and planted them and they actually germinated. He said that it seemed that each seedhead only produced one new grass so i guess it also had to do with seeds being viable enough.

The problem with St. Augustine being seeded is early disease problems and bad tolerance to cold weather. S.A.D is a big occurrance especially in the earlier St. Augustine cultivars.
