Sod fighting against backyard weeds/grasses?

Hubby & I are planning to sod our front yard in Southeastern Virginia with a hybrid tall thescue sod. We removed a huge 30 ft tree from our front yard, and we haven’t been able to get anything to grow in the mass of ground up root chips (which is basically mulch). Regardless, its sparseness has allowed a billion weeds to grow and spread to the backyard, but it’s still in decent shape. Honestly, we just can’t afford to sod everything. So, are we going to be fighting weeds and overgrowth from the backyard by not sodding it? We also have some bermuda that has been spreading like wildfire over the past 4 years in our side yard, and we’d like to know whether we should kill it all off and overseed with thescue??? Perhaps in the fall when it will take better? If anyone has any experience about only sodding a front yard and how it worked for weed/different seed contamination, or if you’ve sodded over a tree removal sight, please feel free to share. Thanks!
