Greetings all, I came across this site as a result of a Google search. Maybe someone can help me out a little. If so….thank you in advance.
First off my lawn is on Long Island NY (North Shore) It came with the home I recently purchased. Little if any care had been given to it, other than mowing. I have no clue what type of lawn it is. Its lumpy, bumpy and patchy in some places as well as un-level in others. I am not worried about leveling large areas as the yard is naturally hilly. I removed an above ground pool and now have a 27 foot circle and a decent amount of sand and a layer of some other scaley, flakey material over it (I am guessing to reduce footprints under the liner). I want to use the sand to fill in the lumps and bumps around my yard and then seed to create a more uniform lawn. Can anyone help with the proper steps to take in order to do this correctly ? And does anyone know what that flakey material might be under the pool, and will it be ok to mix it all in ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

You can put the sand in the low spots and either sweep it in with a broom or you can drag it in with a piece of carpet behind your riding mower. The artifical product sounds like silica, or isolite, neither will hurt your grass.

Thanks Turfmiester, After it is all spread out should I seed right away or wait till the sand settles after a good rain or 2 ?
Thanks again for your advise.
Scott

You can seed right after you drag it in and then water daily until seeds germinate and then deeply and infrequently.

If you can post a picture of your lawn. I would like to see the progress you have.

HA !
I have a 6-8 inch circle of sand 27 ft round and lumpy “lawn” thick with thatch. Its a small yard. I guess the previous owner decided a big pool in a small yard is better than mowing the lawn. And what lawn is there was poorly maintained. Its a horror show. I am going to thatch and then spread the sand around the yard and see how it comes out. I may have to just till the whole thing
Its been blazing hot here so I have been putting it off a week or so. I dont have a working digital camera at the moment. Picture the worst.

I would wait until cool weather then overseed and see how it is in the spring. The growing season is going to be over before long.

Thanks, I really appreciate your advise. As you can probably tell this is my first lawn.
