Rye in Bermuda

Last winter I overseeded my Tif Bermuda lawn with what I thought was annual rye. This winter, I have bits and pieces throughout my yard and I didn’t overseed. Short of pulling it up by hand, is there anything I can do to remove it? I live in the Austin, TX area.

Its sounds like you have either Poa Annua, Poa Trivialis or Perennial Ryegrass in your yard. Their are some chemicals on the market that can help you to control these grasses (or weed) however, when temperatures start increasing which they probably will in the Texas area you could start mowing the grass lower , verticutt, or aerify the bermuda to help weaken the undesirable grass and apply fertilizer to help promote the bermudagrass back. Once the soil temperatures start exceeding 80 and up you need to weaken the weed and promote your bermudagrass back. You can look these grasses up on internet to get all kinds of info.

Spray round-up and it will kill whatever it is and it won’t hurt the bermuda, but wait to long or you will kill the grass. As long as your bermuda is not greening up you’ll be ok. Spray within the next two weeks. I got poa annua in my fairways and I’m going to be spraying round-up in the next two weeks
