roots showing

I have several places in my lawn were the dirt looks like it was washed away over the last 2 years, you can see the roots, the grass is very thin and doesn’t respond to fertilizers. I was told to apply builders sand in the areas the roots are showing, this is to give the grass something to attach to and the runners. Does anyone have any input on this. Thanks.

I think you got the right answer although I might also add some potting soil to the mix to add nutrients. Good luck.

Personally I would stick with the sand.

I have some bad spots too, what does the sand actually do to the soil to make the grass fill in the bad spots.
