How do i remove heavy thatch in a floratam lawn?

Hi, i ahve approx 20,000 sq ft yard and used floratam sod last march. i have a heavy layer of thatch in some spots. it looks like hay with green sprouts fighting through. what is the best way to remove this? also can i use a plug aerator?

The only time I’ve seen “thatch” in St Aug is when it gets watered daily or even more frequently. If you change to water it weekly, the thatch will gradually go away. Changing from daily to weekly is not something you can do cold turkey. You have to wean the grass off the daily.
