pool back fill

I recently filled in an old, cracked pool. Do I need to break up and remove the “cool deck” around the pool or can I simply cover it with about 4″ of sand and sod over it? Jack hammering and disposing of the concrete is gonna be very expensive.

It’s a full Sun application and st. Augustine is the predominant grass in my area, Houston, tx.
