newly planted st. augustine

We just planted a pallet of St. Augustine in our backyard. How often should we water? And how should we water? We’ve used sprinklers so far – leaving on hours at a time. But I’ve also heard that I should just set the hose down on a patch and just let it soak that way? I want this grass to spread as fast as possible – suggestions wanted!

Water the lawn area you have planted as on a regular basis – usually daily for newly sodded lawns unless rain is occurring. After the first week, start stretching out the time between watering so that the roots will grow downward toward the soil moisture. When you do water, water deeply. During hot periods sodded lawns may require more frequent watering than once a day. As far as hosing the lawn, I would just be careful not to wash the soil out of the sod. I would also suggest watering early in the day so that your grass is dry by nightfall. This would decrease your chances of getting a fungus on the lawn.
Good luck!
