Last Friday I laid 400 sq ft of St Augustine sod as an experiment. I tilled an area of my yard that gets about 4 hours a day of sunlight. The rest of my yard is Bermuda that gets plenty of sunlight. My plan is to replace the whole yard with ths St Augustine but, I wanted to be sure it would grow in the area that gets less sunlight first (so far it is doing great). OK now that I have ambled on I will get to my questions. How long should I wait to mow the new sod? I was told a month but it is already grown about an inch. Will it take over the Bermuda that is adjacent to it ( I created a 2 ft buffer between the two grasses)? if I use roundup weed and grass killer to kill the Bermuda how long should I wait to place new St Augustine sod?

Thanks

hmm. I’ve heard no later than 2 weeks, even 1 week during optimal growing time. Make sure it’s 3 inches cutting height. If it’s Palmetto or semi drawf SA, you probably can get to 2.5 inches.

you can actually plant right after you spray round up as it becomes in active upon hitting the ground. However, Roundup takes about a week to work.

My suggestion is spray the bermuda with roundup twice about a week apart. Otherwise prepare to fight the bermuda constantly.

Thanks for your replies. The St Augustine is doing great. I think I am going to wait until Sept. to do the rest of the yard it is too hot to throw sod right now ( I am getting to old to be out in the heat busting my butt). I will follow your suggestion on spraying the bermuda twice when I get ready.
