Hi all,

So my lawn was in need of renovation. The entire back of my house was almost bare, the front had some nice green grass but with large bare spots. So I hired some professional help. The bare spots were soiled, seeded and strawed. Fertilizer was also spread everywhere and ortho all season weed killer sprayed in the back. This was done a week ago, and it has been raining in the evening everyday since. Now the places where I had nice green grass are starting to develop yellow patches. Is this normal?

alot of possible problems. first of all where do you live- you generally don’t seed in the spring. also why are they spraying weed killer on the newly seeded grass????also, you may have had too much water, depending upon the amount. you may need to spray fungicide on the new grass. it’s a tough time of year to seed.

Thanks Ted,

I live in the midatlantic (wash dc area). Since my lawn was looking real bad with all those bare spots, the professional lawn man came out here. He said it was still okay to seed since it’s not very hot yet and we’re still getting good amount of rain.

As I had weeds in the back, I asked him what to do. He said he would spray the weed killer in the back and then lay down the seed. He also cut the entire lawn before seeding. Now I’ve got a yard full of straw, and the nice grass that I have is turning yellow – not all of it, just getting these spots. Also in the front, I have yellow streaks.

Big Al,You may need to consider seeding in the fall. I consider the fall to be the beginning of the turf “season” in the cool season and transitional zones. More turf is lost in July and August than any other time. Newly spring seeded turf will be a handful to keep alive during the summer. Re: It has no established root system.

FYI: you may want to apply 2#(actual material) per 1000 sq.ft of potash to help the plants you have survive the heat and water problems asssociated with turf in the summer.

Why not wait and see what’s left after the summer and plan an overseeding in September. Call someone else though because the whole spraying herbicide while seeding thing has me wigged out alittle……

Just my two cents……..
