Help! My first lawn and it SUCKS

Hi all, looking for some advice. I live in Northern NJ in an environmentally sensitive area. I want to use as little pest/herbicide as possible. I have tons and tons of crabgrass (broke down and applied preventer this year) and the grubs are horrific. I’m going to look into milky spore and/or nematodes to wage war on the grubs, but I need a suggestions for what kind of grass to plant that is weed and bug resistant. Some other factors that might help you help me:I get decent sun, at least 6-8 hours. I have a crappy sprinkler system, but it can get my lawn through drought if I need to. I can’t afford a pro this is our first house.
Any suggestions? I’m thinking of zoysia, I don’t care if it takes a little longer to green up.
Thanks!

Since you already put down weed preventer- you can’t start a new lawn from seed because the weed preventer prevents everything from germinating. You might want to go ahead and plug some Meyer Zoysia into the area. You will have to find some way to control the grubs however- even if it means applying insecticide one time. Check out a local certified nurseryman, and find out the different options.

zoysia is good takes longer to grow but once established it is very competitive with weeds have you thought of reducing your lawn area a bit and put in some shrub and perennial beds?
