I have an interesting problem and I can’t seem to find out how to slove it. I have a spot on my lawn that my dog likes to roll in and then he absolutely stinks. I believe some kind of ani,al either sprayed it or urinated on this spot, but I don’t know what to put on the lawn to get rid of it. We wash the dog, but he goes right back and water doesn’t help. Any suggestions?

Well, that is interesting but not impossible to solve. What makes you believe that you have a spot on your lawn that would attract a dog? You have observed this spot where the dog rolls?… am I correct? What is unusual about this spot? You already have your first clue in this. As a lifelong owner of dogs, I can tell you that dogs will roll in anything that might cover their scent. Dogs are hunters/predators by nature. And by nature, dogs smell like dogs. In other words, they have a strong odor by their very nature. Dogs are creatures of habit and will follow routes that they establish and do not often change them. Any moisture a dog’s fur picks up will make the dog’s natural smell more strong than it did when it’d fur was dry. I’ve never seen a dog roll in skunk urine to this day. They won’t and skunk urine, no matter how much it makes your eyes water at first, will not last more than a few days. My advice is to investigate the spot that your dog rolls in constatnly and see what might be there.(ie a rotting carcass of some type) But in all practicality, it is what the dog likes to do in that spot to spread it’s natural oils around on it’s fur. Dogs are smelly and especially so if wet. I hope that points you in the right direction. I doubt it is grass that makes your dog smell.

Same problem here.Extremely stinky spot in the lawn in our fenced back yard.Dog rolls in it and stinks.I knelt down and sniffed to confirm the spot.
What could it be???There are no large animals in our fenced yard. Could be squirrel, skunk, raccoon, cat urine at most.Smells fishy stinky.Have had mushroom growth in the lawn recently – wonder if this is some kind of stinky fungus?
Searched the web heavily, and this abbreviated thread was the best I could find.Thanks.

Same problem here. I haven’t been able to find any info on this. Our dog finds the spots in our lawn and at the park. She usually finds them first and then other dogs start to roll in whatever it is. The smell is sometimes musk-like or fishy.
I have also been experiencing damaged grass in a new lawn. The blades turn black at the base and then brown. They fall over in a similar direction as if something urinated on them. It looks very different from a dog urine burn spot.
I’m not sure if the two are related. I, bravely, took a whiff of some freshly damaged grass and it seemed to smell similar to what my dog rolls in.
Thanks.
