Growing grass in a corn field

We builta house on 7 acres of corn field. Having a hard time getting grass to grow on about 4 acres.This is the 4th year. What we have is thin and patchy. And this year it is not very green like other yards around us. I’ve been told I should let it “go to seed” How do you do that? Any hints?Thanks

Dave,I think they mean to let the turf grow tall and at its full height it will produce a seed head. Why this would help your lawn I do not know. Your soil may contain high levels of herbicides residual from its corn field days. If you can, find out from the farmer what was used in the past. If you can find that out, some internet work could lead you to the companies website. Where you can ask thier advise. It may be as simple as applying activated Charcoal. This should stop the pesticides from harming your lawn. The other thing to do is have your soil tested and see what nutrients are needed for your specific site. pH could be out of whack.

Thanks Cohiba: The farmer who owened the land died. We purchesed it at estate auction. I will ask around some of the farmers in our area. How long will the grass need to grow to go to seed? What do you recomend for weed killer? Thanks again.

Dave, It would really depend upon the type of turf you have to get it to go to seed. For instance Perennial Ryegrass is about 10-14″.Keeping in mind that seed produced this year will not grow until next year as it needs a cold treatment over the winter. That is why seed is easier to buy than it is to get it yourself by letting your turf grow. I really cannot see a reason to do this. Test the soil and see if you can figure out what was used on it prior to your house. Ask at the local seed or mill type stores maybe they sold stuff to the old farmer. If you get the soil tested and want me to look at the results let me know.
