grass type

Just found this forum and basically know nothing about grass types. My current lawn is centipede which is nearly all dead in the front and taken over by weeds and moles in the back. I live in coastal SC and can literally pick up shells out of the soil in my backyard. I’m getting ready to have the lawn torn up and install sod and an irrigation system. I have some differing options amoungst landscaping companies on using Zoysia vs St Augustine sod. I do have some shade in the back yard with a lot of shallow tree roots. I’ve never been a hge fan of the corarseness of St Augustine grass, but I’m looking for whatever will grow and be the lowest maintenace.
Any thoughts?

Florida is so different than S. Carolina. I’d ask your local landscaper. Not some joe-blow but someone who’s been around the block or two just for some knowledge.
Personally I like my zoysia over St. Augustine. Feels so soft to walk on. With that being said, there are so many different zoysia grasses out their now. Some are great for full sun like my Empire. But Empire is not great with shade (a buddy of mine found that out). I’m sure there are shade types out there that might serve you well.
Just remember Zoysia goes dormant upon a freeze. It comes back slower in the spring verses St. Augustine at least in Florida. My neighbors yard is always green sooner than mine, but some summer his looks heat stressed and mine does not.
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
