Grass for central florida lawn

I need a lawn! I have made several attempts to grow something in my yard but nothing seems to hold. I tried plugging seaside Paspalum but after 2 months of watering, it is 90 percent dead, being over taken by weeds. I plugged St. Augustine, but the plugs never spread. I am considering bermuda or bahia seeds. I want a thick green lawn that can withstand direct sunlight 10 hours a day. There is no shade and therefore my soil is quite dry(pale grey). I believe originally it was a bahia lawn(I still have a few patches) but it seems so thin, weeds work their way in too easily. I don’t have a sprinkler system, so watering more than once per week could be tough. any suggestions
