Crabgrass everywhere

I’m taking over a home where there has been crab grass growing in the yard for 20 years easily, so basically, it is all crabgrass.. ugly, unsightly and well-established. The yard is probably 30’x20′.
Is it possible to get rid of it at a minimal expense? And if so, how?? Or should I just give up?? Also, gophers cause holes occasionally.
Thanks!

like to know where you’re located-and some pics- having some difficulty seeing too much crabgrass just yet for most of the country.

It may be too late for this but you can eliminate crabgrass easily. Crabgrass dies in the winter and regrows from seeds. Therefore to eliminate crabgrass you need to put out a pre-emergent to control the seeds.
I moved in the late summer/fall and the yard I took over was weed covered. Crabgrass everywhere. I put out a pre-emergent and so far have almost zero crabgrass this year.
PS – as Ted says, it helps to know where you live and what kind of grass you have if you want best/most helpful responses.
good luck.
