I have a charcoal colored fungus growing in my lawn in E Texas and would like to know if anybody knows what it is and how to treat.Charcoal in color and when you step on it, it puffs in the air and desperses.

Parker, what is the size and shape of the fungus? For example, slime mold which occurs on St. Augustinegrass dusts the leaf blades with gray little balls, scarcely 0.5 mm in diameter, and they are charcoal when smeared.
Other fungi such as puff balls have 2-3 cm diameter balls, but often brownish, and with varying spore colors.

It is like a dust on the blades of grass very small in size

We have just noticed the same thing on our grass. In small areas but it is like charcoal dust attached to the blades of grass, upon stepping on it black dust like [spores] spreads. Now we have a few more spots near the original ones. What is it, how do you get rid of it?

Slime mold usually goes away by itself, especially after a hard rainfall or a few cuttings. Phil

Regardless of what fungus it is, a great organic solution for all turf fungal diseases is ordinary corn meal applied at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
