bumpy lawn

I have a well established lawn (30 years old and well treated), but this year it has become very bumpy, uncomfortable to walk on. There is no apparent dead grass or tunnels beneath the surface but on close inspection, there is a grid of sunken dirt up to an inch across that winds around the yard in no particular pattern. The rivulets wind between clumps of turf and there is no grass where the rivulets are. Any ideas?

What type of lawn do you have? Where are you located? Sounds like you may have a cool season lawn that was planted with seed? Possibly Bluegrass?
