Army Worms

I live in Arkansas and have a Zoysia lawn. I have a company taking care of it and they said this week that they have found Army Worms in my lawn. Does anyone know about these worms? Also, I have been paying these people to take care of my lawn should I have to pay extra for them to treat this? Can I treat it myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know there are different Zoysia grasses but I don’t know which one I have. Thanks!

Assuming they’re telling the truth, they can damage if there’s too many of them. Some use chemicals (harmful to environment). Some use benefical nematodes (biological control, safer for environment). Take your pick. You can do it yourself. It’s real simple. Walmart, home depot, etc will have chemical products. Benefical nematodes is another story. A bit hard to find locally. Either way, you’ll save a lot. You must be well off to hire someone to take care of your yard. I would never do that. More than likely, they will cause problems…

Do you know which variety of zoysia you have?

Donna, Are these worms causing any damage? Are they bothering you? If not, let them go. Don’t be too quick to treat if there is no damage. Maybe the company wants to treat to make a few bucks at the end of the season.

Thank you so much for your responses! I have never been a part of a forum before. This is really neat. I haven’t noticed any damage to my lawn other than it being a little dry. We have had very little rain this summer and I have watered and watered my lawn to keep it green and lush. Wow, water bill has been horrible! But I’ll pay it in order not to lose my Zoysia. I love this grass. It’s like luxary carpet. I’ll check out walmart for some products and treat it myself. Sometimes I wonder if paying others to take care of my lawn is such a good idea. If I knew when and what to treat it with, I’d learn to do it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!
