Cutting St Augustine down

I purchased a home recently and am having to quickly learn about St. Augustine lawns.

The lawn is over 3″ thick and I have a problem getting my 4″ popup sprinkers above the grass line. Is there a way to cut it down maybe an inch without seriously harming it?

Three inches is the generally accepted minimum mowing height except for dwarf varieties (Seville, Jade, Palmetto, Delmar) of St. Augustine. Cutting shorter stresses the grass and makes it more susceptible to disease. Try a slightly shorter cut and see if it solves you problem. As an alternative you can replace the risers on your spray heads with longer pieces.

This may be what I am looking for the, dwarf varieties (Seville, Jade, Palmetto, Delmar) of St. Augustine.Can u elborate a little more, please thank you.
