There is a dead zone about 3′ wide 15-20 feet from all 4 oak trees (water oak?) in my yard. Even the weeds have trouble staying alive. I thought it was a water issue, but this year the rainfall in SC has been record setting. Close to the tree everything grows fine. Any ideas?

Location is the Piedmont region of SC. Grass type is Emerald zoysia.

My automatic fung-adar starts beeping when I read about unexplained grass death. When the problem seems to happen in circles, that’s the real clue.

I would apply ordinary corn meal at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Go all the way up to the tree trunk and out past the drip line. Corn meal attracts a fungus that acts like a disease against the fungus causing your problem. It should resolve the fungus in 3 weeks. As for your zoysia returning anytime soon, I would go with your experience in how fast zoysia will refill.

You can get corn meal in 50 pound bags at a feed store for $5-$6.
