I used 3″ Palmetto (type of St. Augustine) grass plugs 12″ apart to fill/turf my backyard – covering about 1824 sq.ft. to 2000 sq.ft. of ground. I started out well, but weeds spawned in between and we diligentlly deweeded but could not keep up.Plugs doing great, but tremendous amount of weeds of 4 or 5 different types. Palmetto pretty much established and filled in. How do I treat for all the weeds in Palmetto without hurting the Palmetto?

Oh boy…. that’s gonna take a lot of work. I sodded the entire backyard with palmetto for that very reason. A lot less weeds! I know you say it costs more but the reality is if you add up all the expenses and everything, the end result, it doesn’t make a difference in the cost between plugging and sodding.

Agreed, posiibly better sodded, but now it is done.Plugging is very similiar to the way we establish a new field on our sod farm.Weeds start up between plugs.Mowing on a very regular basis at a given height will allow the palmetto to grow horizontally, choking out weeds as it fills in.The use of a herbicide will help.but use sparingly.Damage to turf will occur.Eventually the turf will overrun the weeds.
