I live in Jacksonville, have a relatively healthy St Augustine lawn that has gone dormant, for the most part. However, around the fences, and particularly on the west side of my property, the grass has been protected from the colder weather. I have a proliferation of dandilions (or weeds that look just like them) as well as some sedge growing. Is there a product I can apply during this time of year that can get this under control?

you can use 24d in these areas, but only if the grass is mostly dormant. use as a diluted spot spray and you should be alright. anything you buy at a hardware store is going to be already diluted. do not use 24d on st. aug. if the weather starts to warm up.

Image is a product that kills sedges, as well as grassy and broadleaf weeds. Manage is a good product, but is for sedges only. 2-4d products will kill broadleafs only…will not touch sedges or grassy weeds. Atrazine will kill some broadleafs and grassy weeds, but not sedges. Use a preemergent herbicide all thru the winter and early spring to get em before they start.

Image sounds like a perfect solution…but will it damage the St. Augustine that has not gone completely dormant? Although we’ve had some frosts and light freezes, the real trouble spots in my lawn are those areas that are somewhat protected and have not gone fully dormant.

i’m a little concerned about the weed i.d.- are we really seeing nutsedge in a lawn in your market this time of year? would like to see some pics posted.

No digital cam here, however i can assure you it’s nutsedge, triangular shaped leaves, dark green, small seedheads. It’s growing in areas that have been protected from the frosts/freezing temps due to it’s proximity to the house and fences. The St. Augustine grass that it’s growing it has not really gone dormant, for the same reasons.

Image is safe on warm season grasses as well as a bunch of ornamentals. It says something about not using to kill winter weeds, but I haven’t figured out why it says that on the label. Do not use Image as your grass is coming in and out of dormancy either. Don’t use it in hot weather, either. A 12oz bottle will run you over 90 bucks, probably, but you only use a quarter ounce per 1,000sqft, so that one bottle will do a little over an acre. Be sure to use a sticker or a soap with it to make sure it bonds to the weed leaves. If the image doesn’t work on the sedges (give it time because it works slow), you’ll have to use a product called Manage. It absolutely smokes sedges.
