I live in Texas, and I just moved into a new house last October. The yard was sodded with tiff-bermuda. Unfortunately, the root system didn't get established real well before the fall got here. I didn't do any preemergents, for fear of hurting the new sod.

My problem is I now have rescue grass popping up everywhere-- mainly in the cracks from the edge of the sod pieces. I know I can treat it in June and July with MSMA. My question is, is there anything I can do now to help control it before it gets any worse? I fertilized with a starter fert right after we moved in, and just fertilized again yesterday. It's beginning to come out of dormancy, and I'm hoping to get it growing ASAP so I can treat the Rescue as soon as I feel the bermuda is ready for it.

Thanks for any help.

oh yeah, don't spray any weed control products on turf that's coming in/going out of dormancy- really stressful time for the plant. just wait a little bit.

Ted-

Thanks so much for your help. I'm 90% sure it's Rescue, but I'll take some pictures tomorrow to make sure. There are a few broadleaf weeds too, but I'll get them with Atrazine in a month or so when the grass is thriving. The only other issue is a lot of Poa Annua, but I know that will die off quickly once the warm weather hits-- which is a certainty in Ft. Worth.

you can use 24d for the broadleafs- much more effective on the broadleafs since you have bermuda. atrazine is used for the st. aug. lawns.

go to google.com, search under images, type in rescue grass- univ. of arizona has a huge chart of pics. weed id is crucial- there's literally a individual weed control product for each weed out there!

did you ever consider usng roundup on the winter weeds when you're 100% sure our bermuda is dormant?

I never even considered using Roundup. I was afraid to use any pre/postemergents just because the grass was so new. In fact, there are still a few sections that haven't completely taken root yet. So, that's why I'm ready for the warm weather to get here and for the grass to begin actively growing. Even though the grass was dormant, I didn't want to risk it in any way, shape, or form.

I checked out the website, but the illustrations are a little tough for me to grasp. Hopefully those pictures will be posted soon. I emailed them to editor@turfgrass.com.

Thanks again for your advice.

Here are the images:
http://turfgrass.com/weeds/rescuegrass.html

They appear to be purely vegetative, no inflorescences, which will make them hard to distinguish from other cool-season grasses.

you're right, we generally don't like to sod warm weather grasses in the fall, too much potential for winter damage.

Ted-

Were you able to see the pictures to determine if the weeds were indeed Rescue Grass?

Ted-

I don't mean to be a nuisance, but you seem to have some good knowledge around this forum. Did you happen to see the pictures? If not, I'll be happy to email them to you, if you'd like.

Thanks again for your help.
