I was just told by a sod supplier that it is too late to lay Palmetto sod down; that it should be done between October and February if any of it is going to be in heavy shade. A few sod farms I called said it was no problem, but do not even try growing any St. Augustine variety, including Delmar or Palmetto unless there are at least five hours of full sun.
The back yard and side yards are the target areas. Half the back receives almost full sun; the other receives dappled sunlight throughout the day. The side yard receives very little sun at all.
So, it is too late to plant Palmetto? And do shade-tolerant varieties really need 5 hours or more of full sun?
