I am about to kill my yard. I will then till it and reseed. I just wanted to know what should be the soil level, relative to sidewalk before I seed it.

I would not till my yard. Rototilling destroys soil structure and brings weed seeds to the surface. Rototilling has its place with compacted or soils that are in need of amendments. However, if you had a lawn there before chances are you can get away with a vigorous aeration program and adding what is lacking in the soil. As for the level, that is really personal preference. I prefer to be slighty above the walks, that way I can run two wheels of my mower over the walk and not worry about missing or scalping. If you till, make sure your level is a little higher because there will surely be settling. The other thing to do is to have a soil test done to see what your new lawn needs to thrive. Incorporating those materials in now will assure a great rootzone for the new turf.Leveling the lawn and putting water down will reveal puddles and these should be regraded. The major reason for this is that those areas are disease prone and that is eliminating a potential problem before it occurs.
