Trying the recommendation to use cornmeal I ordered same from a feed store (none of the feed stores in Orlando kept it in stock. To my surprise after opening the bag, I found what is more like corn powder, not at all flowable like cornmeal sold for human consumption. Even at the largest setting on a Scotts 3000 drop spreader that meal will not come out at better than a ‘very light dusting’ rate. I’m sure the ‘meal’ will break down and go to work a lot faster in the dust form but I have only been able to apply it by hand – 50 pounds, one handful at a time – like feeding the chickens. Oh, I tried a broadcast spreader too. Same results…the powder clogs in the opening(s). Maybe someone more ingenious than I can contribute a better way to spread the corn powder. The reason I’m asking is I still have 250 pounds left.And for those thinking of buying cornmeal to use as an organic fertilizer, ask about the size/texture of the cornmeal before you buy it.

You might try mixing some dry sand with it to see if the weight of the sand will help it flow.
The finest ground corn I’ve seen was corn GLUTEN meal. That stuff is pure dust. I’ve not seen horticultural or agricultural corn meal ground anywhere nearly as fine as grocery store corn meal.
