I live in Florida, Tampa area, and I am cosidering installing Zoysia in my yard. I have St. Augustine in my yard now and It is getting patcy and to me it just dosen’t look good. I have looked at www.zoysia.com and considered there plugs, however I dont like the fact that it will take 2-3 years for full coverage. I also looked at www.lawngrasses.com and considered the seed option as well. After reading posts about both of these methods and the people unhappy with zoysifarms.com and the others that say seeding is not the way to go with this type of grass, I am still undecided about wich method would be better. Any help in making my decision easier would be great. Thanks in advance, Adam

If you let your St Augustine get patchy, you will REALLY hate the zoysia. Reason being is that the fungus that took out your St Aug will take out your zoysia, too. At least the St Aug will fill in in a few weeks after you control the disease. The zoysia will take 2-3 years to refill again.

Zoysia is not as slow as some folks think, especially the Empress and Empire versions. I live due east of you (Merrit Island). If you plug your yard on 8 inch squares with strips it will be nearly filled in by end of summer.

One alternative is to plug the bare spots with zoysia and then add some some sod strips to your yard. Cut the yard using a low setting to encourage the zoysia to take over. Also you can use 2,4,D as your spot weed spray. 2,4 D kills St Augustine so don’t spray everywhere unless you want dead St A. but you can kill any St A that intrudes on your zoysia.

Good luck.
