Worried–New bermuda sod turned brown

Worried – posted 16 May 2001 20:12

Last Saturday, I planted bermuda (419) sod in my front yard. It is now brown with only little bit of green. Should I be worried? It went brown almost overnight. A few rows are turning green but the majority turned brown. I water it 2-3 times a day. Please help.

Hope you get a reply. I have the same problem. I planted small pieces of sod in rows in a large bare spot. The sod was cut fresh in the morning and laid that afternoon. I planted each piece with a handful of fertilizer underneath it. I watered it thoroughly and then it began raining heavily that night and has rained twice daily since. The spot was previously a large crabgrass spot that was treated in late Feb or early Mar. Could the crabgrass preventer still have an effect on the soil?

My guess is that residual preemergence herbicide and fertilizer were too much for roots to handle. I don’t belive there is anything you can do to reverse the action. As an experiment you might apply agricultural “Gypsum” which is reported to help clear the soil of salt and such things.

I need help with this also. I live in Sunny San Diego, and I swear the sod came brown and dead looking. They keep telling me it is that time of year and even if I fertalize it, it will still be yellow. Yet there is about three pieces of sod that are beautifully green and growing. I still have a payment due and would like them to write me something saying if it doesn’t green up I will get it re-done. What do you think?
