Winter Rye….?

I recently moved to Pasadena, Ca. and my new home has a huge amount of ST. Auggie on the site and my gardener wants to do a rye grass seeding for winter as he claims the winter will turn my grass completely brown. If this is the case I would do a winter seeding. I know it gets a bit colder here than the coastal California areas I am use to…. but does it get that cold that I lose my ST. Aug come Christmas…….. any thoughts out there?

Putting rye over turf that goes brown (dormant, not dead) in winter is common remedy for color. In turn, rye dies off on it’s own in spring as weather warms up.
